Guru Ram Das Ji started a new town and began digging a large pool of water there. The pool became the Amritsar — the “pool of nectar” — and the town took its name.
Today, Sri Darbar Sahib (the Golden Temple) stands in the middle of this pool.

He invited traders and craftspeople of all kinds to live in the new town, which helped it grow quickly. He wrote the four Laavan — the hymns sung at every Sikh wedding (Anand Karaj), as the couple walk around Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
