When Guru Nanak was a boy, his father gave him 20 rupees and told him to make a “true deal” (a good bargain) in the market.

On the way, Guru Nanak met a group of hungry holy men. He spent all the money on food for them. When he came home he said, “Feeding the hungry is the truest deal of all.”

This story is called Sachcha Sauda (the True Deal). Guru Nanak taught three golden rules: remember God, work honestly, and share with others. He spent his last years as a farmer in Kartarpur, where he started the tradition of everyone eating together.
