Guru Har Rai Ji loved nature. As a boy his robe caught on a rose bush and broke off a flower. He felt so sad that from then on he was always careful with all living things.
He grew beautiful gardens and kept a hospital of herbal medicines that was free for everyone.

When Dara Shikoh, a son of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was very ill, Guru Har Rai Ji sent him rare medicine — even though the emperor was not a friend of the Sikhs. He taught that we should help anyone in need. He also kept a force of 2,200 horse riders to protect people.
